Last Saturday we were blessed to have been a part of Anna and Matthew's wedding. These two have dated forever and have finally decided to tie the knot. They couldn't have picked a better day. The weather was mild for December, which allowed us to get some great shots outside to compliment the beautiful interior shots. For us, it was a bit of a reunion since we have shot the weddings of three of Anna's bridesmaids. That just made the day all the more fun. Thanks Anna and Matthew for being great sports. Yesterday I delivered the toys from my toy drive over to the wonderful folks at the Marshall County Christmas Coalition. As you can see I had a little help loading the truck. Overall we collected almost 90 toys! Thanks to all my awesome clients who participated this year. I was also very touched when my UPS delivery man brought a package to the studio the other day. He noticed the toys on the couch and asked what I was doing. As I told him, he reached into his pocket and gave me a cash donation. He then shared a story that not too long ago he was out of work yet through the kindness and generosity of friends and former coworkers his kids still had Christmas presents. He just wanted to give back. That's what it's all about, isn't it? If you didn't get the chance to donate, but would still like to help out just send me an email or call the studio and I can give you the information you need. Thank you again.

Warm Cocoa!

Tonight is the night for the annual Boaz Christmas parade. That can only mean one thing....HOT CHOCOLATE! Who doesn't love hot chocolate? Actually, I like warm chocolate because hot chocolate (you know, like the kind you get at football games) burns my tongue. Everyone is invited to come by the studio tonight. I'll be serving up my now famous warm chocolate while it lasts. Really I should correct myself before I go any further. I found out recently that real hot chocolate is made from actual chocolate that's been melted. Hot cocoa is made from the cocoa powder. I also found out that one of the very first versions of hot chocolate was made by the Aztecs, and it had chili peppers in it! YUCK! No wonder they called it hot chocolate! Because I can only imagine the mess I would make melting hershey bars, and slicing chili peppers, tonight I will be serving...warm cocoa with marshmallows. It's funny what you learn if you do a little research. Anyway, be sure and come by, it's a great spot for watching the parade, and the kids can catch candy like crazy...hope to see you here tonight!

Well if you didn't know it...we went to the beach this weekend. It was kind of a last minute trip for us. We left after lunch on Thanksgiving day and just got back last night. Although it was a little rainy I can honestly say I had the best time ever. It was great to just hang out with family and our friends Paige and Dusty. We got to take part in the annual Rosemary Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Paige had a good day at the Rosemary Beach Holiday Market selling her Christmas stockings and frames. We had a blast shooting family portraits for the Davis family, and then Katie and Andrew's engagement session. Then on Saturday, Michelle made us some delicious snacks for the game. On the last day I woke up early like I always seem to do. The sunrise over Rosemary was particularly beautiful that morning so I grabbed my camera for a few quick shots. It seems weird to say this since I'm a photographer, but I don't take enough pictures.

Stunning. That's the only word I can think of to describe Meg and Bill's wedding. But of course we didn't really expect anything else. I've done portraits for this family since Meg was a little girl so I've practically watched her grow up. As you can see she made a beautiful bride, and I know that she and Bill will have a wonderful life together as husband and wife. Sorry I haven't posted in a while...but as you might have guessed we've been a little busy. Anyway, last Saturday's wedding was our third this year at the Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge. Since this is the first official day of fall I thought I would post some images from yesterday. It was our time for our annual trip to Mr. and Mrs. Colvin's pumpkin farm. As usual, there was an abundant supply of pumpkins...too many to choose from really. We always have so much fun watching the kids pick them out. This year Jackson was looking for something unusual, and Sylvie was looking for the prettiest one. Payne wasn't really picky, but it was funny how this year to him they were "pumkins" and last year they were "balls." Yet another reminder of how quickly they grow.

It was a great day for a wedding at the Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge, and we had a wonderful time working with Brandan and Jeremy. There were so many cool things about this wedding: Brandan's amazing dress, the flowers, Sadie's hair, Brandan and Jeremy's first dance, Tristen doing the robot, not to mention the fact that Michelle and I even got to dance. Several people have been giving me a hard time for not posting anything new...so this is for you...you know who you are. I couldn't really think of anything significant to post today, but one thing is different...I'm wearing jeans for the first time in a long time. I guess since I'm not wearing shorts and flip-flops, summer is officially over. I hate to see it go, but it's been a good one.

Yesterday was the day that we dread all summer...the first day of school. Of course, my kids were excited. Jackson was ready at 6:45 and couldn't really understand that his teacher really didn't want him there that early. And Sylvie was pumped about being at a new school. This year, just like in years past, we are blessed with some great teachers...and we look forward to watching our kids learn and grow. As you can see in the photo, they are ready. This is always much harder on the parents...

Well we are finally back home after an amazing (but tiring) three weeks at the beach. It was sad to have to leave, but it's always good to be back home. On the drive back I was thinking about what I would miss the most about the beach. It came to me that there is no one big thing that I will miss, but rather lots of little things, and most of them don't even include the beach. Here are just a few, in no particular order:

Goodbye Anna

Once again, and all too quickly we are reminded of how friends can come and go out of our lives. This past year, our friends Paige and Dusty have hosted an exchange student from Italy. Over the course of that year, we have become very close and our kids have absolutely fallen in love with Anna. As she and Paige visited us at the beach this past weekend we were faced with the fact that it would probably be the last time we would see her, as this was her final week with her host family. As we said our goodbyes, I was heartbroken, and I've never seen my kids cry that much. I had to remind my children to not be sad because she was leaving, but to be happy in remembering all the good times we spent with her. That was difficult to do because I had a hard time believing it myself. I will especially miss the way she says "Mister Payne." Arriva derce Anna, we love you and miss you greatly.

It's funny how kids always seem to bond. Yesterday Payne made friends with the cutest little boy named Theo (pronounced Tay-o) whose family is from Belgium. His uncle is a cancer survivor and his aunt is a French teacher in a Louisiana elementary school. They were kind enough to invite us over to a little birthday party they were having for him. Sadly it was their last day to be staying in our little community so in all liklihood we will never see them again. Just another reminder how quickly friends can come and go. So happy birthday Theo, and farewell to you and your family.

Shell Island!

Yesterday was the first day that we didn't have any sessions booked. So we took the opporunity for our annual trip to Shell Island which is a short ferry ride east of St. Andrews State Park. Being the master snorkeler and shell finder that I am, this is always one of the highlights of my vacation. The day started out nicely with the required trip to Thomas' doughnuts for breakfast. Then we managed to catch the first bus to the ferry, but Michelle was a nervous wreck as usual because she's always afraid that if we aren't on the first bus...well that just ruins the whole trip. Now normally the sea surrenders her best shells to the master shell finder (me) but this year, for some reason, the shells weren't all that great. I managed to find some decent ones, but nothing that really stood out. I pulled in a few sand dollars though, which is always cool. Oh well, there's always next year. I had a great time and the kids did too, which is all that really matters. Why didn't anyone ever tell me that I look pretty goofy in snorkeling gear?

Ok, so we had a couple of rainy days so we got a little behind on our sessions. The past few days have been great though, and we've been able to get caught up. So just in case you thought we weren't really working, here are some shots from the past week.

I love Independence day. It's absolutely one of my favorite holidays. This one was especially nice because I got to spend it with family and friends. I have to mention that last night we all went out to the amazing Boondocks restaurant just north of Panama City Beach. If you ever get the chance to go...you should. Get there early though. It's worth the two hour wait. Anyway, early this morning we joined around a thousand of our closest friends for the annual 4th of July bike parade at Rosemary Beach. After that we were so hot that we immediately hit the pool for some family fun. (Sorry for the shirtless photos of myself). As if that weren't enough for one day, we (Michelle) cooked some fabulous burgers and hot dogs on the grill (a nice all-American meal) and we were joined for lunch by our friends Willie and Carl. But first there was the visit from the ice-cream truck...too cool! Sadly, after lunch it was time to say goodbye to our friends Dusty, Paige, and Anna, who had to leave early and will be sorely missed. As darkness approached, we headed back to Rosemary Beach for the highly anticipated fireworks display, one of the finest shows on the coastline I must say. Wow...what a busy day we've had. And I couldn't help but think as I was enjoying myself all day long that there are many who didn't get the day off because they were busy working to maintain the freedom that I so much enjoyed. I'm talking about those who serve our country in the military. As we celebrate our country's birth, now more than ever we should take time to remember those who serve, and have served our country so bravely. Because of them, we are free.

At the Beach!

We made it! After a late start, we finally got on the road to the beach. We arrived just in time for our first session with miss Sarah Brett, followed by Grayson and Hudson. It's here! Michelle and I have the privilege of directing Vacation Bible School at our church, Union Grove Baptist in Crossville. I think this is our 7th year to direct, and every year we have a blast. This year the theme is from Group Publishing, and it's called "Power Lab," which is a challenge to decorate for, but the lessons and music are awesome as usual. A big thank you to our church and our VBS workers who always to a great job. Tonight will be the first night of fun and everyone is ready. If your kids are interested, we would love to have them join us. We start at 6:00 PM every night. Last Saturday we shot Kim and Eric's beautiful wedding. Although it was a hot day, we managed to survive and the wedding was fabulous. It was my first time to shoot at the immaculate Gabrella Manor in Birmingham, and we were able to use the beautiful setting to our advantage. With so many great areas it was hard to stop shooting. You can tell by the slideshow that we had a great day. It was also the first wedding that I can remember banana pudding being served at the reception...yum! Whitney and Travis are one of the sweetest couples I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Recital 2008!

I had the privilege once again of attending the Studio B dance recital last Saturday. Of course I wouldn't have missed it because my little Sylvie was dancing. She is in the beginning clog class, and this was her second recital. I couldn't be more proud. She's learned so much and she absolutely loves it. A special thanks to her teacher Miss Bobbi Dale, the owner of Studio B dance studio, and Miss Jazmen and Miss Ashley, who help in the class.

State Champs!

Congratulations to the Boaz High School boys golf team. Yesterday they successfully defended their 4A State championship at the Robert Trent Jones "Fighting Joe" course in Muscle Shoals. One state title is quite a feat, but two in a row is amazing! Maybe some of these guys could give me a few pointers...I need all the help I can get.

braces...

There are a few people that know this already...but I'm getting braces. I'm excited, but nervous at the same time. This is sort of a personal issue for me, but my crowded teeth have always bothered me, and finally at the age of 29 I'm going to do it. I'm posting today because this afternoon I'm taking the first "real" steps in the process. Today is the day that I'm having two teeth extracted. Then on Thursday as far as I know the wires and bands will be applied. I probably won't feel so hot for a few days, so everyone please say a little prayer for me if you don't mind. And no, those aren't my teeth in the photo.

Congratulations to Rachel and Raven Walker! The wedding was held at Liberty Baptist Church, and we were truly fortunate to have been a part of it. It was a great day, and everyone looked fabulous. I shot Rachel's seniors when she graduated high school, and I always believe it's the greatest compliment when clients return. I like this image in particular because it was something I hadn't done before. I always like trying new things. Sometimes they work...other times not so much. This time I was happy. Well it's good to be a Pirate this week. Not only did the BHS cheerleaders finish 15th in the nation at the national competition in Orlando, but both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams won their area championships. Great job everybody, we're proud of you all!

It's snowing...in Alabama! I really can't remember the last time we had any significant snow, and it's probably not going to last very long. I'm going to enjoy it while I can because it sure is beautiful.

Well I'm finally back from Tampa. And even though I had a great time and learned a lot...I missed home. It's definitely great to be back. While I was there I had a chance to meet and hang out with some truly inspiring photographers. Here is a group shot after lunch at Cafe Dufrain. I can't believe it! After 17 years in this business, I've finally decided to attend Imaging USA. This is one of the annual conventions held for professional photographers. This year it happens to be in Tampa Florida, which is closer than it's been in a long time. For me it was a bit of a last minute decision, but so far it's been well worth it. I've only been here for a day and have learned so much my head is spinning. I can't wait to come home to implement some of the new techniques. For now, I'm just going to try and take it all in, and take the opportunity to network with some truly amazing photographers.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this Christmas season so very wonderful. The image above is from our Christmas card. On the inside it says: "We triple-dog dare ya to have a merry Christmas." Just in case you didn't know...that's from "A Christmas Story" which is one of my all-time favorite movies. It reminds me of a much simpler time, when things weren't nearly as complicated. Part of me wants to go back to those times...just to see what it was like. Anyway, hopefully in a few days I'll post up some shots from Christmas morning. Until then...may the joy of Christmas bring childlike laughter and the love of Jesus Christ into your heart.

A True Giver

It's so easy to give. Especially during this holiday season, when we are constantly reminded that it's far better to give than to receive. When I was a kid I'm sure I could've argued with you about that one...even though now I know it's true. In reality, I've met very few true givers. You see, to me being a true giver reqires two things. First the gift should require you to sacrifice something in order to give it. Secondly, the gift should be something the recipient can't get on their own.

Yesterday, I was witness to true giving. My beautiful daughter Sylvie has been studying giving in her first grade class with Mrs. Marsh. She had mentioned months earlier that she wanted to get her hair cut but of course her father protested. Then Michelle told her about Locks of Love. Sylvie knew immediately that this is what she wanted to do. The way she puts it: "There's this really bad disease called cancer and the medicine you take makes your hair fall out and since I have plenty of hair I can give it to one of those kids." Now how could I say no to that? Anyway, yesterday was the big day. Our friend April who works at ShonTaylor salon here in Boaz volunteered her time and came to Sylvie's class to cut her hair and all her classmates got to watch. It was so fun to watch, even though I had to fight off a few tears. I think we could all learn a few lessons from our kids...

It's been very easy for me over the years to resist the urge to be a pet owner. It's just never been my thing. My six year old daughter Sylvie on the other hand has been begging for a puppy for I think about 6 years now. The issue has popped up about once a month, and I somehow always managed to put it aside....assuring her that once we could pay for a fence in the back yard we would get her a dog. Well when I found out my little girl was saving her money to pay for a fence, along with a few bats of the big blues, I knew what I had to do. On the way to dinner one night Michelle and I quietly agreed amongst ourselves we would begin the search for a dog. Little did we know the search would begin and end that very night. After dinner, as we approached a stop sign, I noticed a man on the corner holding a hand made sign. As I tried to make out the words, my 1st grader (who reads on about a 12th grade level) shouted from the back seat "CHRISTMAS PUPPIES!!!" She didn't bother to read the rest of the sign...the part that said "$100." Anyway, that makes no difference. We pulled around and about sixty seconds later I was holding Ruby in my hands. To make a long story short, she seems right at home in the Gray household, and she's all to eager to lick our faces in the morning. My little Sylvie is quite happy and she doesn't even mind cleaning up the accidents...well not too much anyway. So I guess we have a new family member.

That's right. Tonight is the night for the annual Boaz Christmas parade. That can only mean one thing....HOT CHOCOLATE! Who doesn't love hot chocolate? Actually, I like warm chocolate because hot chocolate (you know, like the kind you get at football games) burns my tongue. Everyone is invited to come by the studio tonight. I'll be serving up my now famous warm chocolate while it lasts. Really I should correct myself before I go any further. I found out recently that real hot chocolate is made from actual chocolate that's been melted. Hot cocoa is made from the cocoa powder. I also found out that one of the very first versions of hot chocolate was made by the Aztecs, and it had chili peppers in it! YUCK! No wonder they called it hot chocolate! Because I can only imagine the mess I would make melting hershey bars, and slicing chili peppers, tonight I will be serving...warm cocoa with marshmallows. It's funny what you learn if you do a little research. Anyway, be sure and come by, it's a great spot for watching the parade, and the kids can catch candy like crazy...hope to see you here tonight!

Well day one of Santa Claus portraits was a huge success! We had so much fun, and everyone enjoyed the day. It was interesting to see everyone in their Christmas outfits this early in the year. This little cutie just happens to be my new niece Savannah. She was quite impressed with Santa, and I'm sure he was impressed with her as well. Apparently she's been good all year because Santa secretly let me know that he has the elves working overtime just for her.

The day we have added is Wednesday, November 21st...the day before Thanksgiving. If you would like an appointment, please let us know soon because it will more than likely book solid, and Santa will probably not be available for any other dates. That's right...it's official. This week, one of my very first studio subjects came back to see me. 17 years ago, right after I first opened my studio, Courtney's mom brought her to have portraits made. She was less than a month old then. Now she's a senior. It's hard for me to believe that time can fly so quickly...but it does. Some things don't change though. They only get better. As you can see, Courtney is every bit as beautiful as she was 17 years ago.

This week I had the opportunity to visit Boaz Intermediate School. It seems they needed a group photo of all their students in front of the school to put in the cookbooks they are selling for a fundraiser. By the way if you need a cookbook...give me a call. Anyway, the best way for me to get the shot was from above...in a bucket truck. After climbing in, I happened to remember that I'm not all that fond of heights. The kids kept yelling "higher" so we went higher and higher, until we were above the flagpole which was really way higher than I needed to be. I decided that was high enough, but the kids kept on..."higher, higher!" I think they just wanted to see if I would get sick or maybe see if my nose would bleed. I survived after all, and got this cool picture. Thanks to all the kids and faculty at Boaz Intermediate for turning my job into an adventure. Now...anybody need a cookbook?

Well in case you didn't notice by the chill in the morning air, fall is coming. This can only mean one thing...our annual trip to the Colvin pumpkin farm in Crossville. This is always a fun experience for the kids...but mainly for us. The Colvin's have such a neat place. It's like something out of a book...we just love it. I've posted a few photos, but it's one of those things that you need to experience for yourself...

Michelle took this picture of me taking a picture at last Saturday's wedding. I told her next time I looked so goofy she needed to stop me. I imaging over the years I've had to look pretty strange to get some shots...like laying down in the aisle, or standing in chairs, or hanging from balconies...but hey, it's what I do.

On the subject of work though, I was watching a US Open tennis preview the other day and they had a special segment on Andre Aggassi. Now when I was in high school I loved to play tennis. None of my friends, however liked to play. Tennis is one of those sports where you need at least two people because you can look pretty stupid trying to play it yourself...so I eventually switched to golf. Anyway back in those days Aggassi was all the rage. His hair was just a little longer then...and he always wore denim shorts. Well twenty years later, he's still the rage, but he's decided to retire at the ripe old age of 37 (same age as myself, incidentally). Numerous major titles, millions in prize money, a career that spanned over two decades, and all while showing class and integrity. I was thinking as I watched, "here's a guy who has done what he loves to do for his entire career, and has gotten paid quite well so now he can retire." Then reality hit me like a ton of bricks. It's not just about doing what you love...it's much more than that. It's about work ethic. Andre Aggassi didn't get where he is today simply because he loves to play tennis, although that's a huge piece of the puzzle. He has been successful because he has worked his tail off day after day, and practiced endless hours to make himself better. If you don't LOVE your job/career, why not? What steps can you take to make this happen? If you are doing what you love as a career, good for you! But are you working daily to improve and become better at what you do? I think the majority of us struggle here...notice I said "US." Anyway, that's all I have for today...now it's time to go to work.

We spent the weekend in Tuscaloosa for Jessica and Keith's wedding....which was absolutely incredible! I had the pleasure of shooting their engagement portraits on the University of Alabama campus back in the spring, and they were so much fun to work with. The wedding was no different. The ceremony was held at the Chapel of First Baptist Church downtown followed by a reception at the beautiful Jemison-Van de Graaff mansion. Everyone looked great and we ended up with some awesome images. You can see the slideshow here. Thanks to Jessica and Keith and their families for trusting us to capture their special day and making us feel welcome. Also a special thanks to Rita Hyche who helped us so much throughout the day.

I can't think of a better way for me to spend my birthday than photographing this amazing couple. Amy and Gavin were married this past Saturday at Bethany Baptist Church, followed by a reception at the Guntersville Hampton Inn Courtyard. This couple is just too cute, and they look just perfect for each other. Funny how people manage to find their way to one another. She is from here in Alabama, but he is from California. Wednesday I had the chance to do a couple of sessions at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham and I wanted to post a couple of my favorite shots. First is Princess Brooklyn, who has just started school in the 4 year old class. As usual she was a perfect model. After that was Mr. Rafe, who has just grown up so fast...six months already...hard to believe.

Well I don't know where it went....but I know that it's gone. I think this just might have been the fastest summer ever. Even though we had a great time, now we look forward. Today is the first day of school. Jackson is starting 4th grade at the intermediate school...or "BIS" as he calls it, and my little Sylvie is going to 1st grade...and it's breaking my heart. Even Payne will be going to school...for two days a week anyway. One thing that I know for sure is that they will all be in good hands, and that helps put my mind at ease. We know for a fact that they have excellent teachers, so we will look forward to what will certainly be an excellent school year.

What an incredible day! Jana and Chris were married this past Saturday at The Church at Lake Guntersville. These two are so much fun and obviously completely in love with each other. We were very pleased to be part of their special day. Before the wedding, Chris gave Jana a Bible with her new name printed on the cover which I thought was super sweet. The reception was held at Gunter's Landing and before things got started we were able to sneak away for a few portraits around the golf course. Back at the clubhouse, the couple toasted with Coca-Cola, which they had both sworn off since January. Birthday Bash!

Yesterday was so much fun! We decided this year, since all our kids' birthdays are in July, to have one big party at the Boaz pool. All in all it was a good decision. As you can see, Payne enjoyed his cake, Sylvie and Jackson enjoyed swimming with friends, and to top it off, we had a special surprise visit from Hanna Montana herself! Anyway, thanks to everyone who came out and helped make the day so special.

We had a great time at Kelley and Ben's wedding. Everything was fabulous and the couple looked amazing. They were married at the First Methodist Church of Piedmont which was a beautiful historic church downtown. You can tell this couple is well organized because every last detail was perfect. My favorite part of the ceremony was when the minister had them look at one another's hands, describing their purpose for one another. It was truly a beautiful moment. After the wedding, the couple travelled via horse and carriage to the Piedmont Church of Christ for the reception where, again, everything was perfect. Can you believe it? Payne is 1 year old today! It's been quite a journey, and so much fun watching him grow. I really didn't think it would be much different than the other two, but he has his own special uniqueness. Like that tuft of hair on top of his head, or the way that all of his baby sentences begin or end with the word "ball." Well it's 1:30 am and we're leaving for the beach in the morning, but I couldn't leave without posting something from this most incredible wedding. Kari and Cody were married at Covenant Cove in Guntersville and although it was quite warm the wedding was simply beautiful. When we started the portraits the sun was out and it was just plain hot, but a cloud came up shortly followed by rain. Just as we were about to shift into plan B, the rain stopped. They clouds however stayed, giving us perfect light for the rest of the day and cooling things off a little bit. These two are a super cute and fun couple, and I admire them for putting up with us and some of our crazy ideas. We were very happy with the pictures, and you can see the slideshow by clicking here.
